Preventative Care

Human medicine is based on the merits of preventive health care. You visit your doctor regularly, even when you are healthy, so that your doctor can check in on your overall health and perform screenings for common diseases. The same applies for your pet's veterinary care.

At Spoon River Animal Clinic, we understand the importance of preventive pet care. Your pet's comprehensive preventive care plan involves annual wellness exams, vaccinations, nutritional counseling, parasite control, blood testing, and more. All of these pieces fit together to keep your pet healthy and detect illness in its early stages, when it can be treated with less difficulty and cost.

You can learn more about our many different wellness services below. Feel free to call us if you have any questions or would like to book an appointment.

Examinations

During your pet's annual wellness exam, your veterinarian will perform a complete "nose-to-tail" examination of your pet. This examination includes inspection of all your pet's major body systems to make sure everything is functioning as it should be. Your veterinarian will look at your pet's ears, eyes, and mouth, evaluate the condition of the skin and coat, and listen to the heart and respiratory rates. With these simple tests, your veterinarian can gain a picture of your pet's overall health and detect potential medical concerns in their early stages.

Your pet's wellness exam is also a great opportunity to ask your veterinarian any questions you have about your pet's health and daily care. At Spoon River Animal Clinic, we are happy to answer whatever questions you may have and offer advice on how to best care for your pet at home.

Vaccinations

Today's vaccines prevent diseases that were once fatal for pets. We offer all important vaccines and will work with you to develop a vaccination schedule tailored to your pet's individual lifestyle, overall health, and risk of exposure to infectious disease.

Parasite Control

Parasites like fleas, ticks, and heartworm are more than just a nuisance. They can spread serious diseases like tapeworm and Lyme disease and even pose health risks for the rest of the family. The best way to protect your cat or dog from parasites is with preventative medicine and regular parasite testing. We can help you control parasites with our full range of preventatives, regular parasite testing, and tips on how to combat parasites in and around your home.

Microchipping

Microchips help reunite thousands of pets with their families every year. At Spoon River Animal Clinic, we recommend all pets be microchipped. The procedure is simple - an identification microchip, about the size of a grain of rice, will be encoded with your contact information and implanted beneath your pet's skin.

Veterinary hospitals and animal shelters across the country are equipped with special scanners that can read these microchips and reunite you with your best friend. We offer the most widely used microchip products to increase the chances of a safe recovery.

Nutrition & Weight Management

Your pet's nutritional needs are affected by age, activity level, and chronic medical conditions, which means they will change throughout your pet's life. Our nutritional counseling services can help you choose the right diet for your pet to keep him or her happy, healthy, and active for many years.

Blood Testing

Some medical conditions are difficult or impossible to diagnose simply by looking at your pet. Routine blood work is so important because it helps your veterinarian detect and diagnose medical problems that might otherwise fly under the radar. Having blood work conducted regularly also enables your veterinarian to catch illnesses early, before any minor issues turn into major ones.

Pain Management

Animals feel pain and discomfort under the same circumstances that people do. We believe that recognizing and alleviating pain is the essence of good patient care. We can help you manage pain in your senior pet living with arthritis, your puppy recovering from neutering, or your cat undergoing cancer treatment.

Pharmacy

We always stock our pharmacy with a broad range of the best veterinary drugs in the field. Having a pharmacy on-site gives our clients quick, direct access to whatever medications their pets may need.
