Veterinary Pet Surgery

At Spoon River Animal Clinic, we understand that surgery can be a stressful or scary experience for you and your pet. That is why we strive to make every surgery as safe, efficient, and painless as possible. We accomplish this by offering the most advanced surgical techniques and technology, including surgical laser!

General & Advanced Surgery

Spoon River Animal Clinic - General & Advanced Surgery

Before any procedure, we screen our patients for safety and tailor anesthetics specifically for their individual needs. During surgery, a trained technician will continuously monitor your pet's vitals using our advanced monitoring system. Our clinic maintains a supply of blood for all types of pets in case of emergency. The blood is collected from donor pets that live with their owners, and all blood is carefully screened for disease. We also use heated surgery tables to maintain your pet's body temperature throughout the procedure.

Our doctors are experienced performing a wide range of basic and orthopedic surgeries (orthopedic surgery for small animals only). We also have a board certified surgeon available for consultation.

If your pet is scheduled for a surgery, we will provide you with pre-surgical instructions.

Spay/Neuter Procedure

While spays and neuters are considered surgical procedures, they are by far the most frequent and common surgeries performed by our veterinarians. As such, our entire team is trained on taking every precaution to keep pets safe and monitored before, throughout, and after surgery.

We will be able to provide you with a recommendation on the best time to spay or neuter your pet depending on age, breed, and physical condition.

The benefits of spaying or neutering are significant. In addition to minimizing overpopulation, these procedures can protect against health problems such as certain cancers and infections. Generally, the effects of the procedure on a pet's demeanor are overwhelmingly positive, reducing unwanted behavior and breeding instinct, making them less likely to stray far from home, and having no impact on the pet's ability to play or learn.

We will discuss this procedure during your pet's wellness visit at the appropriate age.

Laser Surgery

Laser surgery is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional surgery. Whereas traditional surgery uses a scalpel or scissors to make incisions, a surgical laser uses a powerful beam of light to remove tissue and seal blood cells and nerve endings as it cuts. In this way, laser surgery reduces pain, swelling, blood loss, and risk of infection to promote a quick recovery and less trauma for your pet. Surgical laser is used in a wide range of surgical procedures, including cyst, tumor, and wart removal, as well as feline declawing.
